We Appreciate Simplicity and Durable Materials

Durable materials are key for us. Our products are primarily crafted from metal and solid wood. These seemingly hard and unyielding raw materials become highly versatile with the right treatment. This enables us to merge our love for simplicity with a passion for sculptural forms.

Where does the name SALAK come from?

Salak is nothing more than the fruit of the salak palm, which hides juicy flesh in a shade of off-white under its skin.

I had the opportunity to learn that the word “salak” is used to describe a color while working in a design studio in Great Britain, before I founded the brand.

Starting our activity at the beginning of 2020, our premiere BASIC collection was created in only two colors: black and the so-called “salaka” color.

The shade used on our products is the result of over half a year of work and tests that we undertook before releasing the products to the market.

Did you know that any paint with a specific RAL number is not enough to obtain that specific, repeatable color from the sampler?

The final shade also depends on the number of layers of paint applied, the method of application, the temperature of the oven in which the selected elements are painted, and the selected paint manufacturer.

After many trials, already knowing that this color would become our distinguishing feature, SALAK became the official name of the brand.

Interestingly, this name unexpectedly became an informal abbreviation of my first and last name S (Studio) ALA (Alicja) K (Korbut).

SALAK is also the beginning of an incredible story that I am constantly creating together with you!

Hello!
My name is Alicja Korbut and I am the founder of the S A L A K studio. I graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (at the Faculty of Architecture and Design). Before S A L A K was founded, I had the pleasure of working in design offices both in Poland and abroad. At that time, I mainly designed living spaces, cafes and furniture. In 2020, I returned to Poland and decided to establish my own studio to continue developing my passion for designing furniture with unconventional design.

In the studio, I am responsible not only for product designs, but also for their production to a large extent. All furniture and accessories are hand-made in the heart of our studio.

I approach each order very individually, valuing contact with my customers. I care about creating timeless and durable products, I believe that furniture should serve us all for many years, which is why SALAK relies on high-quality materials.

Hello!

I am the head of the production department. I have been working with metal for 20 years. My passion for this raw material began with the renovation of vintage motorcycles. In our studio, I am mainly responsible for all steel elements that are made in our Salaki workshop.

Privately, I am interested in motoring and (for over 12 years) photography.
